The Necklace Summary
The Necklace is a short story written by Guy De Maupassant. It is about this couple that is not as wealthy as other families, but the wife wishes that she was high class and royalty. Well, one day the husband comes home and asks the wife if she would like to go to a ball that he got invited to. The wife breaks down in tears because she is so upset that she has nothing to wear to the ball. Her husband gives her his life savings so that she can buy a dress. The wife is grateful, but is depressed that she has no jewelry to go along with her bare neck.
Her husband reminds her that she has a friend who is and has a lot of jewelry that she could borrow. The wife goes to her friends house and borrows a beautiful necklace to wear to the ball. The couple goes to the ball and has the most wonderful time, but it is soon over. The couple decided to walk home, but when they arrive at their house the wife realizes that she no longer has the necklace on. The couple starts to panic and tells the woman, who lent her the necklace, that they just broke the clasp and they are fixing it. They search all over town to find a necklace replacement, and they find one just like the old one. The necklace is 40,000 francs and the couple must sell everything they own to pay for the necklace. The couple is now in debt, but the necklace is paid off and her friend will never notice.
For the next 10 years, the couple must work and work to try to get out of debt. One day the wife sees her the friend that let her borrow the necklace and tells her that she has been working for 10 years and it's her fault that the couple is no longer happy. The woman doesn't even reconize her until the wife mentions that the clasp was never broken and that the new necklace is much cleaner than the old one. This is when the woman says that she didn't even notice the necklace was different and that the other one was fake and wasn't worth more than 500 francs.
